Rolling Strong — Celebrating the Community

The Walk ‘n’ Roll 5k is a fun, noncompetitive race-like event created for the residents and other friends in the community with disabilities. It’s open to everyone, and is always a great day in RVA for hanging out with friends and family, supporting our resident athletes, and celebrating the community. We rely heavily on volunteers and participants to buddy up with resident athlete on a 3.1 mile course that loops twice around Swan Lake in Byrd Park. There’s plenty of FUN to be had, too.

Saturday, April 18th is going to be a great day for a race! Take a look at our volunteer opportunities for the 5k and join us by submitting the form below.

Walking Buddy – We have residents in both power and manual wheelchairs.  Manual chairs will need to be pushed around the course.  Some power chairs may need assistance with driving, others will make you run to keep up!  This is a hands on, socially interactive job.  At registration, we’ll provide you with some background about residents so you’ll have plenty to chat about. If you choose this job, please specify your abilities and preferences  If this is your first 5k with us, we ask that you attend an orientation session on Thursday, April 16th at 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm.  For this job, you must be 16 years or older, or accompanied by an adult.

Cheer Squad – Encourage our resident athletes around the course! You’ll be located near the start and finish lines and at the Party Zone.  This is a great place for families with young children.

Safety Monitor (Barricades) – Stand at the barricades to ensure the safety of the course.  At times, cars may ask you for alternate routes, and we’ll provide direction cards to assist drivers around the road closures.

Party Zone – Located in the middle of the course, this is the spot to help participants take a break, offer water, and have a bit of fun! Warning – you may be asked to assist with spinning the ‘door prize wheel’!

Medal Presenter – The volunteer all the participants love – you’ll be on hand to cheer, congratulate, and present medals to all of our 5k-ers!
